2013 Fit for Kids Community Showcase

To date the Funders’ Consortium has provided over $390,000 in awards to Kane County community organizations. At the event we will learn from these organizations and other community members, as we celebrate the successes of the campaign and look forward to future efforts. Making Kane County Fit for Kids Presents the 3rd Annual International Walk to School Day, Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012. All children are encouraged to walk and/or bike to school in participating schools within Kane County to promote healthy choices.

Refrigeration equipment installed for local food pantries

Refrigeration equipment for 3 local food pantries, Feeding Greater Elgin, Two Rivers Head Start, Aurora, and Interfaith Food Pantry in Elgin and at Allen Elementary School in Aurora has been installed.  This expands the capacity for the pantries to provide fresh produce and dairy to low income community members.  Allen School now offers “Super Snacks,”…read more

The Healthy Living Council of Greater Aurora held “Wellness Works”, a half day workshop for businesses in the Aurora area on Worksite Wellness.  Cheryl Larson, VP of Midwest Business Group was the keynote speaker.  Local employers participated in a panel discussion, focusing on best practices within their organizations.

Improve accessibility to fresh fruits and vegetables

Funds were awarded to garden projects to improve accessibility to fresh fruits and vegetables. Lifespring Ministries in Aurora installed a garden and changed food policies requiring more fruits and vegetables to be used in communal meals. Assi Homes-Batavia Apartment uses their garden produce to stock their on-site food pantry.  They have also installed playground equipment.…read more
