53 Kane County Schools participated in Walk to School Day. The Fit for Kids Funders’ Consortium made $300 mini-grants available to participating school PTOs. Each school planned their own event. Refrigeration equipment for 3 local food pantries, Feeding Greater Elgin, Two Rivers Head Start, Aurora, and Interfaith Food Pantry in Elgin and at Allen Elementary School in Aurora has been installed. The Healthy Living Council of Greater Aurora held “Wellness Works”, a half day workshop for businesses in the Aurora area on Worksite Wellness. Cheryl Larson, VP of Midwest Business Group was the keynote speaker. Local employers participated in a panel discussion, focusing on best practices within their organizations.

Schools in Kane County also received funding. CUSD 300 in Carpentersville purchased equipment to distribute fruit and vegetable snacks. Aurora129 installed a salad bar at Hill Elementary. Additional implementation projects promote physical activity. These included partnerships to add playground equipment to parks, schools and low income apartment complexes. Funds were awarded to garden projects to improve accessibility to fresh fruits and vegetables. Lifespring Ministries in Aurora installed a garden and changed food policies requiring more fruits and vegetables to be used in communal meals. Assi Homes-Batavia Apartment uses their garden produce to stock their on-site food pantry. They have also installed playground equipment.…read more

Since the release of the Fit Kids 2020 Plan in January 2011, the focus of the Fit for Kids campaign is to work with community members, organizations and municipalities to implement the Fit Kids 2020 Plan.
